#SexforGrades: University of Ghana’s decision ‘a little too harsh’ – Gyampo, Butakor lawyer




Lawyer for Prof. Ransford Gyampo and Dr. Paul Kwame Butakor has described the sanctions against his clients as one that is ‘a little too harsh’.
Prof. Gyampo and Dr. Butakor are two lecturers of the University of Ghana and were implicated in a BBC docudocumentary that suggested that they were soliciting for sexual encounters for academic favours.
Following that exposé, University of Ghana management launched an investigation into the matter and handed the two lecturers suspensions without pay.
Whilst Prof. Gyampo was given a 6-month suspension, Dr. Butakor is facing a 4-month suspension.
Responding to the decision by University authority, although lawyer for the two, Francis Xavier-Sosu, says that they have accepted their fate, they find part of the University’s judgement as a little too harsh.
The statement from Lawyer Francis Xavier-Sosu adds that the release from the University, announcing the decision it has taken concerning the two lecturers, creates a lot of doubt in the minds of people.
“The statement by the University creates a lot of doubts in the minds of people and to make it succinctly clear, Prof. Gyampo and Dr. Butakor were not found guilty of Sexual Misconduct or Sex for grades as was initially alleged by the BBC.
Additionally given the fact that our Clients were not found guilty of any sexual misconduct contrary to the anti-sexual harassment and misconduct policy of the University, we find it
strange that they are required to be subjected not only to training but also to an annual assessment for 5 years in this regard. It is for this reason that we find the decision to be a little too harsh and the university’s communiqué as misleading,” parts of the statement reads.
